Log Cabin Animal Hospital
“A different experience for all creatures”
Please welcome to our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Betsy Hutchens with ten years of experience including successfully implanting a human pacemaker into a dog.
Dr. Hutchens made local and national headlines with appearances on Inside Edition, Maury Povich, Leeza Gibbon show and many magazines.
"The Log Cabin Animal Hospital is a safe haven for pets as well as a nostalgic museum and meeting place for area residents. Years prior to the construction boom in Geist, the area was acquired by a rich businessman who aided in developing the land into what we know today at Geist Reservoir. The Log Cabin Animal Hospital showcases many pictures from and much information about these days, along with artifacts from the area. The Hospital is also the headquarters of Dr. Sandor Gal, who researched this era and organized his findings into a museum. He is a premier veterinarian who has made the unique combination of an animal hospital and museum a reality, and has an interesting story himself to tell."

Our Philosophy
Offering the best and most complete, individualized pet health care is much more than just knowing veterinary medicine. It requires special care, dedication, exceptional teamwork and above-and-beyond information technology. But mostly it requires a desire for lifelong learning and dedication to serve the pets and their owners at the highest and most affordable level. This responsibility includes educating pet owners on an ongoing basis. This is exactly what Log Cabin Animal Hospital is about.
What you are about to discover is our lifelong achievement and commitment to provide you and your pet the very best.
Our visionary approach
The vision of the founders of Log Cabin Animal Hospital was to provide an exceptionally comfortable environment where owners and pets are treated like kings at an affordable, competitive price. Pet owners are always surprised to realize how relaxed and comfortable their pets are in our home-like setting. Of course, a relaxed pet and a comfortable pet owner is just the beginning of the story. We needed exceptionally caring doctors, a great staff and an advanced communication technology for client education. One of the missing links between pet owners and a veterinary practice is the lack of communication between visits. Client compliance regarding giving medications and following recommendations of a veterinary practice are only about fifty percent at a regular veterinary practice. Some of that is due to the cost of caring for the pet. One key objective of our practice to offer several affordable pet health care programs with low monthly payments to allow more pets to enjoy the services and benefits of our practice.
Everything has a story - ours has a more than a century old history
In Indianapolis the name Geist is associated not with a person but with the 7 billion gallon reservoir on the city's Northside. Few remember the lake's namesake: Clarence Geist, a high rolling early 20th century tycoon who owned country clubs and utilities. Equally obscure is that Geist, originally a northern Indiana farm boy, was the nation's largest private owner of utilities and master of some of America 's finest resort hotels. Still, the belt of expensive housing that surrounds "his" lake may be an appropriate monument. During his lifetime from 1874 to 1938 he earned a reputation as both a shrewd businessman and an unabashed lover of status and money. Legend says he purchased one exclusive East Coast club to avoid having to wait in line at the golf course and built another for spite after being denied entrance to one nearby. The Geist area has a rich history including the long-lost Germantown, a small village now at the bottom of the Geist reservoir. (Click here for History of Geist).
Our story begins….with our cedar log cabin
This cedar log cabin was built in 1949, and is the last remaining building of old Geist. It was owned by Fred Eichrodt until March of 2001, when it was purchased by the Gal family. It took over two years to remodel this historic building to its original beauty, and beyond. (Before & After pictures). It was Mr. Eichrodt's specific request that his old house saved and remodeled, and not to be destroyed. Dr. Sandor Gal made and kept this promise and now proudly presents this historical building to the Central Indiana community. Log Cabin Animal Hospital offers the widest range of services (Services) and an exceptional staff. (Staff). Dr. Gal's interest in history and historic preservation motivated him to devote a special section on this site to local history. (Geist history). History is to be shared, especially with those who appreciate it. A permanent Geist Museum exhibit is opening inside of Log Cabin Animal Hospital's lobby area. The outside area will also being created to depict the lifestyle (a carriage, a plow and other items) of the Geist area from the 19th century, making Log Cabin Animal Hospital a great field trip destination for children.
Our medical technology
Log Cabin Animal Hospital has the entire human hospital on a small scale, behind the examination rooms. Treatments, prescriptions, X-rays, surgery and other special procedures are done under one roof.
We are thrilled to make many high-tech procedures available to our clients. Ultrasounds allow us to look inside the body for diseases. We also have an EKG diagnostic computer. With this equipment, we are able to diagnose many common heart ailments found in animals. Our dental suite is located in the treatment room . Here advanced dental procedures such as teeth cleaning and polishing are performed. The X-ray unit is also in the main treatment room. Here, X-rays can be taken and developed in less than 5 minutes to help diagnose internal ailments. In the special surgery room all major sterile surgeries are performed. This includes the routine spays and neuters as well as the more advanced orthopedic surgeries, exploratory surgery and others. This surgical suite is equipped with very advanced equipment. It has a wide variety of monitors, life support systems, anesthetic machines and respirators.
Our hospital
Log Cabin Animal Hospital was established in January of 2004, and it is located on the Northeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana, across from Geist reservoir. (Map). The Geist area has a rich history including the long-lost Germantown, a small village now at the bottom of the Geist reservoir. (History of Geist). The hospital is housed in an historic log cabin that took over two years to fully renovate for use as an animal hospital. (Hospital History). A heartfelt thanks goes to all who have supported us over these two years, and who have worked to make LCAH possible! (List of companies).
At 3,000 square feet, our facility easily accommodates our three veterinarians, support staff and many clients. (Our Staff). We also have 38 indoor dog kennels and cat condos for when owners entrust their pets to us. We provide full range of specialty veterinary services. (Our Services).
Log Cabin Animal Hospital is probably the most comfortable, most charming and most unique animal hospital you have ever seen. Promoting the wellness of pets and offering the highest level of veterinary services in the most relaxing atmosphere is our goal. (Our Philosophy)
Our clients and their pets have a feeling that they are in someone's beautiful home rather than in a hospital. Our waiting area has soft leather sofas and chairs, a children’s play area with toys and games, a TV/VCR, and internet access. We have separate Cat and Dog exam rooms, with beautiful hand-painted murals on the walls (Murals), and a TV/DVD player and leather chairs in each exam room.
